Summary:
Many people were shocked when the Kansas City Chiefs upset the Patriots 42-27 in Foxborough. New England was outgained in yardage 537-371 as Alex Smith was nearly flawless. Tom Brady struggled going 16-36 for 267 yards and no touchdowns. Brady seemed to miss his number one target Julian Edelman who is out for the season with an ACL injury. The other notable omission was the workhorse running back Legarette Blount who rushed for over 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. The Patriots defense was awful allowing 42 points and far too many big plays.
New Orleans fell on the road to Minnesota 29-19 in week one. The Saints were outgained by the Vikings in yardage 470-344. Minnesota was one of the weaker offensive last season so the Saints will certainly have their hands full trying to stop the explosive Patriots offense. Drew Brees was 27-37 for 291 yards and a touchdown in the loss. The Saints running backs were a complete non-factor combining for 60 total yards.
Bottom Line:
While New England really struggled in week one, they are still loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. I would be very surprised if the Patriots dropped two consecutive games especially against a Saints defense that doesn’t look to be improved.
