On Thursday, June 1st, the Cleveland Cavaliers will be on the road to take on the Golden State Warriors in game one of the 2017 NBA Finals.

Summary:

Golden State breezed through the Western Conference with a perfect (12-0) record in the post-season while Cleveland was (12-1) in the Eastern conference.  These two teams are very evenly matched having split their last ten head to head games.  For the playoffs, the Warriors are averaging 118.3 points per game while allowing 102.0.  The Cavaliers are averaging 116.8 points per game and have allowed 103.2.  The addition of Kevin Durant has made Golden State the NBA’s most unstoppable offense.  Durant’s size and length is a problem for Cleveland because Lebron James will likely have to guard him.  James is having perhaps the best post-season of his career averaging 32.5 points (on 56.6% shooting), 8.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game.  The Cavaliers have typically employed J.R. Smith on the other team’s best offensive player but he doesn’t have the size to guard Durant.

Kyrie Irving clearly outplayed last year’s MVP Stephen Curry in the 2016 NBA Finals and will need to do so once again for Cleveland to come out on top.  Klay Thompson has been struggling for the Warriors in the playoffs and will need to regain his All-Star form to give the Warriors a third primary scoring option.  The midseason additions of Deron Williams and Kyle Korver give the Cavaliers one of the deepest and most versatile bench units.  Kevin Love has been totally ineffective against the Warriors in the majority of their meetings so it will be interesting to see how much he is relied on.  With no Andrew Bogut this time around, Javale McGee will have play a key role boxing out Tristan Thompson and protecting the rim.  Everyone likes to point to Draymond Green’s game five suspension as the turning point last year but after Bogut’s injury James and Irving attacked the rim at will.  The Warriors are (42-5) at home this season and I expect them to win a close game one.
