Summary:
Gonzaga is (7-0) against ranked opponents while North Carolina is (9-5). For the tournament, Gonzaga is averaging 73.2 points while holding the opposition to 61.8. North Carolina, by comparison, have averaged 83.8 points and have allowed 71.6. Gonzaga ranks 1st in point differential (+22.3) and 2nd in field goal percentage defense 36.5%. Gonzaga is the deeper team with seven players averaging at least seven points per game whereas North Carolina has just four. North Carolina leads the nation in rebounding (43.7) but face one of the rare teams who has the size to match them.
North Carolina’s Joel Berry II is nursing several ankle injuries and was awful in the win over Oregon shooting just (2-14). A hobbled Berry is cause to concern for Tar Heels fans because he’s their second leading scorer (14.5 PPG) and assist man (3.6 APG). Kennedy Meeks should be able to impose his will on the inside but North Carolina’s perimeter players must make their open shots when he gets doubled. Nigel Williams-Goss (16.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.7 assists) will have to step up as the primary scorer for Gonzaga because North Carolina have the size to neutralize Karnowski and Collins on the interior. Ultimately, Gonzaga has been the best defensive team all season and should win the National Championship on Monday.
