Overview:
On Saturday, October 21st, the (6-1) USC Trojans will be on the road to take on the (5-1) Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The Crowd:
“The Crowd” projects a final score of USC 29.0 – Notre Dame 28.6 with an over/under of 57.7.
2017-18 Statistics (130 total teams):
Passing offense: Notre Dame 163.3 YPG > USC 296.4 YPG
Rushing offense: Notre Dame 308.0 YPG > USC 180.6 YPG
Scoring offense: Notre Dame 40.0 PPG > USC 34.4 PPG
Scoring defense: Notre Dame 16.8 PPG > USC 23.7 PPG
Passing defense: Notre Dame 231.2 YPG > USC 238.7 YPG
Rushing defense: Notre Dame 134.5 YPG > USC 146.7 YPG
Turnover Margin Per Game: Notre Dame +1.2 > USC 0.0
Strength of schedule:
Notre Dame is (5-1) with wins over Temple, Boston College, Michigan State, Miami (OH), and North Carolina. Their lone defeat came against Georgia. USC is (6-1) with wins over Western Michigan, Stanford, Texas, California, Oregon State, and Utah. Their only loss came against Washington State.
Summary:
Notre Dame is coming off their bye week and have had two weeks to prepare for USC. Notre Dame ranks 21st in total offense (471.0 YPG) and 13th in points per game (40.0). The Fighting Irish rank 15th in scoring defense (16.8 PPG). USC was able to narrowly pull out a 28-27 home victory over Utah. USC outgained Utah 532-436 in total yardage. Sam Darnold was 27-50 for 358 yards and three touchdowns. Darnold needs to do a better job of taking care of the football as he fumbled three times. Ronald Jones rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. USC ranks 19th in total offense (477.0 YPG) and 36th in points per game (34.4). The Trojans rank 52nd in scoring defense (23.7 PPG).
Bottom Line:
This game all boils down to if USC’s defensive front can stop Notre Dame’s running game. Georgia provided the blueprint to beating Notre Dame earlier this season when they held them to just 1.5 yards per carry. Turnovers have been a problem for USC this year and Notre Dame is among the leaders with 14 takeaways. I think USC will cough the ball up in some key moments and fall on the road to the Fighting Irish.
