Strength of schedule:
USC is (1-0) with wins over Western Michigan and Stanford. Texas is (1-1) with a win over San Jose State and a loss against Maryland.
Summary:
USC was very impressive in their 42-24 victory over Stanford. The Trojans outgained Stanford in yards 623-324. Sam Darnold bounced back from his poor week one performance throwing for 316 yards and 4 touchdowns. USC had two 100-yard rushers in Ronald Jones and Stephen Carr. The Trojans have turned the ball over way too much in their first two games and that is certainly something they will need to clean up. Texas absolutely dominated San Jose State 56-0 a week after their surprising loss to Maryland. The Longhorns outgained San Jose State in yards 623-171. It’s tough to draw much for this game as Texas played such an inferior opponent. Texas has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Shane Buechele but he needs more help from his playmakers. The Longhorns defense allowed over 50 points to a Maryland team that is nowhere near as explosive as USC offensively.
Bottom Line:
The key to this game will be whether the Longhorns front seven can dominate the line of scrimmage and get pressure on Darnold. Darnold has proven to be turnover prone in the first two games. I think this game will be a shootout and USC will come out on top at home.
