Summary:
The Packers finished 2016 with a (10-6) record but were ousted by the Atlanta Falcons in the postseason. Green Bay (+44) ranked 8th in the NFL in point differential. Aaron Rodgers enters as one of the favorites for MVP after throwing for nearly 4,500 yards and 40 touchdowns. The Packers have gone to the playoffs in every season since 2009. After letting Eddie Lacy and James Starks leave in free agency more of a burden will be thrust upon Ty Montgomery. The receiving core is strong especially with the addition of Martellus Bennett. There are questions on the offensive line after J.C. Tretter and T.J. Lang walked. The defense will need to make strides as they were in the bottom half of the league. Still, the core roster of Green Bay is intact, and they should again be a force if Rodgers stays healthy.
Seattle was (10-5-1) last season and were also knocked out of the playoffs by the Atlanta Falcons. The Seahawks (+62) ranked 6th in the NFL in point differential. It has been interesting to see the Seahawks offense transform from a ground and pound unit to a pass happy team. Russell Wilson threw for over 4,200 yards and 21 touchdowns. The Seahawks added Eddie Lacy to the backfield who should help with the power running game. I expect a much bigger season from Jimmy Graham as he gets more acclimated to the Seahawks offense. Seattle always has one of the NFL’s elite defenses and the return of Earl Thomas will certainly help them retain that status.
Bottom Line:
Seattle’s defense will have to dominate the line of scrimmage against Green Bay’s makeshift offensive line if they want to win this game. The Packers have won the last two head to head games against Seattle scoring 28+ in each victory. I anticipate this being a close game but the Packers will win it late with a field goal.
