Strength of schedule:

Penn State is (1-0) with a 52-0 home victory over Akron.  Pittsburgh is (1-0) with a 28-21 overtime home win against Youngstown State.

Summary:

Penn State certainly took care of business against Akron in their 52-0 victory.  Penn State outgained Akron in yardage 569-159.  The possession battle was nearly identical which means the Nittany Lions offense would often score quickly.  Trace McSorely threw for 280 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Saquon Barkley helped his case to win the Heisman Trophy with 246 total yards and 2 touchdowns.  The Penn State defense was dominant as they were one of only eight teams to shut out their opponent in week one.

Pittsburgh received quite a scare when Youngstown State took them into overtime.  Pittsburgh was actually outgained in yardage 418-348 which is pretty concerning when they are about to face a Penn State team that is clicking on all cylinders.  Max Browne was not very impressive in his Panthers debut passing for only 140 yards and a touchdown.  Pittsburgh’s defense played very poorly and will need to step up their game against an explosive Penn State offense.

Bottom Line:

Penn State should have their way with a Pittsburgh defense that struggled mightily last week.  The multi-faceted ability of Saquon Barkley is going to make the Nittany Lions offense tough to stop.  Pittsburgh should put up some points but this will end in a Penn State blowout.
