Strength of schedule:

Oklahoma is (4-1) with wins over Ohio State, UTEP, Tulane, and Baylor.  They were defeated by Iowa State.  Texas is (3-2) with wins over San Jose State, Iowa State, and Kansas State.  They were defeated by USC and Maryland.

 Summary:

Oklahoma suffered their first loss of the season when they fell on their home field 38-31 to Iowa State.  Oklahoma even outgained Iowa State 513-444 in total yardage.  Baker Mayfield was 24-33 for 306 yards and two touchdowns.  The Sooners running game totaled 190 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries.  Oklahoma’s secondary was shredded all game and will have to make some adjustments before the big game against Texas.  Oklahoma ranks 1st in total yardage (587.0) and 6th in points per game (44.6).  The Sooners rank 46th in scoring defense (23.2 PPG).

Texas was able to hang on for a 40-34 overtime thriller over Kansas State.  Texas outgained Kansas State 546-394 in total yardage.  Sam Ehlinger was 30-50 for 380 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.  Ehlinger also carried the ball 20 times for 107 yards.  The Longhorns running game garnered 166 yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries.  Reggie Hemphill-Mapps had a huge game with 12 catches for 121 yards.  Texas ranks 33rd in total offense (464.0 YPG) and 35th in points per game (35.6).  The Longhorns rank 50th in scoring defense (23.8 PPG).

Bottom Line:

Sam Ehlinger will look to take advantage of a weak Oklahoma secondary and put up some big yardage totals.  The Sooners will limit Ehlinger’s effectiveness on the ground as he was their leading rusher by far last week.  Baker Mayfield’s dual threat ability will certainly play a big factor against a Texas defense that has improved as the season has gone along.  This will be the classic high scoring Big-12 shootout.  I like Texas to cover the Spread but Oklahoma will win it at the end.
