Strength of schedule:
Ohio State is (1-0) with a 49-21 road victory over Indiana. Oklahoma is (1-0) with a 56-7 home win over UTEP.
Summary:
Ohio State was actually trailing 14-13 to Indiana in the first half of their game but second half adjustments led to an eventual blowout. The Hoosiers employed a unique strategy where they completely abandoned the running game and found some success through the air against the Ohio State secondary. The Buckeyes cornerbacks lack size and that is one area where they can be exposed albeit against a future NFL receiver in Simmie Cobbs. Three forced turnovers totally changed the momentum as the Buckeyes played more press coverage in the second half. Ohio State’s offense was efficient as J.T. Barrett threw for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns. The real star of the show was J.K. Dobbins who broke the school record for rushing yards by a freshman with 181.
Oklahoma had their way with UTEP dominating them in every facet of the game. The Sooners outgained UTEP yardage wise 676 to 167. Baker Mayfield was 19-20 for 329 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Sooners defense looks to be much improved from a season ago where they were torched by upper tier competition. Oklahoma certainly took care of business but it’s hard to take much out of this game since they played such an inferior opponent. The Buckeyes beat Oklahoma 45-24 in Norman last season and the game will be in Columbus this time around. This game has all the looks of a back and forth shootout.
Bottom Line:
I think Oklahoma will take a page out of Indiana’s book and attack Ohio State through the air with quick throws to mitigate the pass rush. The Buckeyes will shut down the run and make Oklahoma one dimensional forcing them into some key interceptions. Ohio State will take care of the football and pull away in the second half.
