Summary:

The Jets are coming off a (5-11) season and a last place finish in the AFC East.  Cornerback Trumaine Johnson was the big offseason addition signing for nearly $80 million over 5 years.  Most of the improvement will have to come from within if the Jets are going to make a major leap.  Safety Jamal Adams has star written all over him and will look to build on a strong rookie season.  Leonard Williams is a dominant defensive lineman despite his disappointing sack total.  The quarterback room is much improved with Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, and number three overall pick Sam Darnold.  Darnold looked very poised in his NFL debut completing 13-18 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.  The wide receiver room has some talent but a shaky offensive line will certainly be the downfall for the Jets this year.  Last season the Jets (-84) ranked 27th in the NFL in point differential.

The Redskins finished last season with a (7-9) record and were third place in the NFC East.  Washington shipped off starting quarterback Kirk Cousins to Minnesota after three straight seasons of 4,000 yards and 20+ touchdowns.  Cousins was replaced by Alex Smith who some see as a downgrade that signed a $94 million contract.  Other than Smith, the Redskins had a relatively quiet offseason retaining key veterans Zach Brown, Brian Quick, and Dustin Hopkins.  Paul Richardson, Orlando Scandrick, and Pernell PcPhee aren’t flashy additions but they are upgrades.  The uber talented Jordan Reed needs to stay healthy after a season filled with nagging injuries.  The microscope will be hot on the Washington front office and it will be very interesting to see the comparison of how Smith and Cousins play this season.  In 2017, the Redskins (-46) ranked 17th in the NFL in point differential.
