“The Crowd” projects a final score of Cowboys 26.6 – Giants 22.8 with an over/under of 49.5.
2016-17 Statistics (32 total teams):
Yards per game: Cowboys 376.7 (5th) > Giants 330.7 (25th)
Points per game: Cowboys 26.3 (5th) > Giants 19.4 (26th)
Turnover margin: Cowboys +5 > Giants -2
Yards allowed per game: Giants 339.7 (10th) > Cowboys 343.9 (14th)
Points allowed per game: Giants 17.8 (2nd) > Cowboys 19.1 (5th)
Summary:
The Cowboys finished 2016 with a (13-3) record but were knocked out of the postseason by the Green Bay Packers. Dallas (+115) had the 3rd best point differential in the NFL last season. The Ezekiel Elliott suspension is a huge dark cloud over the franchise but he will be eligible to play in week one. The Cowboys will hope that Dak Prescott avoids the sophomore slump after a terrific rookie season. Prescott threw for nearly 3,700 yards with an excellent 23-4 (TD/INT) ratio. The Cowboys have the best offensive line in pro football and a talented group of receivers. The Cowboys defense ranked 5th in fewest points allowed (19.1) and should get a boost from a healthy Jaylon Smith. After seeing some secondary departures, the Cowboys will rely on some young draftees to make an immediate impact.
The Giants were (11-5) last season but were also knocked out of the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers. New York (+26) had the 12th best point differential in the NFL. Eli Manning threw for over 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns last season but his 16 interceptions were the 4th most in the league. Brandon Marshall and first round pick Evan Engram join forces with Odell Beckham to give the Giants one of the most feared receiving units in the league. The Giants failed to have a running back eclipse 600 yards which put way too much pressure on Manning to force the ball downfield. The Giants defense ranked 2nd in fewest points allowed (17.8) last year and didn’t lose any core pieces.
Bottom Line:
The Giants have had the Cowboys number winning the last three head to head games holding Dallas to 20 or fewer points in all three games. I expect Elliott to get a huge workload with his suspension looming and Prescott will make plays when he has to. Turnovers killed the Giants last season and a late one will lead to a Cowboys win.
