Overview:

On Thursday, October 5th, the (2-2) New England Patriots will be on the road to take on the (2-1) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Crowd:

“The Crowd” is projecting a final score of Patriots 30.0 – Buccaneers 23.6 with an over/under of 53.6.

2017-18 Statistics (32 total teams):

Yards per game: Patriots 423.8 (1st) > Buccaneers 362.3 (9th)

Points per game: Patriots 32.2 (2nd) > Buccaneers 23.7 (12th)

Turnover margin: Patriots +4 > Buccaneers 0

Fewest yards allowed per game: Buccaneers 394.3 (30th) > Patriots 456.8 (32nd)

Fewest Points allowed per game: Buccaneers 21.3 (16th) > Patriots 32.0 (31st)

Summary:

The Patriots are coming off a disappointing 33-30 home loss to the Carolina Panthers.  Carolina outgained New England 444-373 in total yardage.  Tom Brady was 32-45 for 307 yards and two touchdowns.  The Patriots running game combined for 80 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.  New England’s defense continues to struggle as three of their four opponents have scored over 30 points against them.  Rumors are running rampant that the Patriots should trade backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for more help on defense.  The Patriots (+1) rank 19th in the NFL in point differential.

Tampa Bay narrowly escaped with a 25-23 home win over the New York Giants.  The Buccaneers outgained the Giants 434-379 in total yardage.  Jameis Winston was 22-38 for 332 yards and three touchdowns.  The Buccaneers combined for 111 rushing yards on 23 carries.  The Buccaneers will get a boost when running back Doug Martin returns from suspension.  Tampa Bay has allowed huge yardage totals to the opposition but have really tightened up their defense in the red-zone.  The Buccaneers (+7) rank 16th in the NFL in point differential.

Bottom Line:

The Patriots have been simultaneously been the most potent offensive team and the worst defensive team in the league this season.  It’s hard to believe New England’s defensive woes will be cured on a short week of rest.  Tampa Bay is currently riding a six-game home winning streak but they will be without defensive starters Kwon Alexander, Lavonte David, and T.J. Ward.  I’ll take New England on the road.
