Summary:
The Patriots return after winning yet another Super Bowl after going (14-2) in the regular season. New England (+191) led the league in point differential. Believe it or not, the Patriots enter this season with an even better roster on paper this year than the team that took home the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Tom Brady returns for his age 39 season and is still playing at an MVP level. Rob Gronkowski will be back from injury and the Patriots added dynamic receiver Brandin Cooks to their plethora of offensive weapons. The loss of Julian Edelman certainly hurts but Bill Belichek will find a way to replace his production. I thought it was a mistake for the Patriots to let LeGarrette Blount walk in free agency but they don’t believe in paying top dollar for running backs. Blount rushed for 1,161 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. For all the attention the Patriots offense gets, people forget that their defense led the league in fewest points allowed (15.6). Including the post-season, the Patriots were (15-1) with Brady at the helm.
The Chiefs won the AFC West with a (12-4) record in the regular season. They ultimately fell 18-16 in the post-season to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round. Kansas City (+78) ranked 4th in the league in point differential. Kansas City appears to be right on the brink of making a deep playoff run but they have done little to improve the roster. The Chiefs let Jamaal Charles, Jeremy Maclin, and Dontari Poe walk out the door. Rather than supplement the current core, the Chiefs opted to use their first-round pick on their quarterback of the future in Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs are still a very good team, but don’t expect them to improve from last season.
Bottom Line:
When fully healthy, the Patriots have proven to be the class of the NFL. Statistically, New England has the advantage in nearly every category and should win this one at home.
