Summary:
After reaching the Super Bowl two years ago the Panthers finished 2016 with a disappointing (6-10) record. The Panthers were totally depleted by injuries and should be much better in 2017. The Panthers (-33) were 25th in the league in point differential while the Titans (+3) ranked 20th. A healthy Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly will go a long way to turning around the fortunes of Carolina. The drafting of Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel should add a new dimension to the Panthers offense. The ageless wonder Julius Peppers returns to Carolina. Peppers was surprisingly productive in 2016with 7.5 sacks despite playing fewer than 60% of the defensive snaps.
Tennessee finished with a (9-7) record in the regular season and fell just short of post-season. Marcus Mariota took the next step in his development and is now considered a top 15 quarterback in the league. Mariota threw for nearly 3,500 yards with a 26-9 TD/INT ratio in 15 games. In week 16 Mariota suffered a broken right fibula and was out for the remainder of the season. The health of Mariota will determine how successful Tennessee is in 2017. Running back DeMarco Murray rushed for over 1,700 yards and proved he is still one of the best backs in the league. Eric Decker and draftee Corey Davis should give the Titans their first legitimate group of wideouts in years. Tennessee was one of the top defensive units early but really tailed off as the season wore on. With Newton likely sitting out I expect the Titans to win this one.
