Overview:

On Sunday, October 1st, the (2-1) Carolina Panthers will be on the road to take on the (2-1) New England Patriots.

The Crowd:

“The Crowd” is projecting a final score of Patriots 31.2 – Panthers 20.0 with an over/under of 51.2.

2017-18 Statistics (32 total teams):

Yards per game: Patriots 440.7 (1st) > Panthers 276.7 (28th)

Points per game: Patriots 33.0 (2nd) > Panthers 15.0 (29th)

Turnover margin: Patriots +2 > Panthers -3

Fewest yards allowed per game: Panthers 251.7 (1st) > Patriots 461.0 (32nd)

Fewest Points allowed per game: Panthers 13.3 (2nd) > Patriots 31.7 (32nd)

Summary:

The Patriots pulled out a 36-33 thriller at home against the Houston Texans.  The Patriots were able to win despite being outgained 417-396 in total yardage and losing the possession battle by eight minutes.  Tom Brady was sensational going 25-35 for 378 yards and five touchdowns.  The Patriots running game continues to be a disaster combining for 59 yards on 20 carries.  Even more concerning for New England is their defense which is allowing the most points in the league (31.7) through the first three weeks.  The Patriots (+4) rank 15th in the NFL in point differential.

Carolina suffered their first loss of the season when the New Orleans Saints defeated them 34-13 on their home field.  The Saints outgained the Panthers 362-288 in total yardage.  Cam Newton had a terrible game going 17-26 for 167 yards and three interceptions.  The three turnovers were a killer to a Panthers offense that has struggled to score points all season (15.0).  The Panthers had success on the ground rushing for 132 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.  Carolina’s defense was gashed for the first time but they still rank 2nd in fewest points allowed (13.3 PPG).  The Panthers (+5) rank 14th in the NFL in point differential.

Bottom Line:

Carolina really struggled to stop Drew Brees and Tom Brady should be able to expose some of the same weaknesses in the secondary.  The Panthers have struggled to score points this season mostly due to the fact that they can’t stop turning over the football.  New England’s defense is too talented to play this poorly all season.  I like the Patriots at home by a touchdown.
