Strength of schedule:
LSU is (4-2) with wins over Florida, BYU, Chattanooga, and Syracuse. They were defeated by Mississippi State and Troy. Auburn is (5-1) with wins over Georgia Southern, Mercer, Missouri, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss. Their lone defeat came against Clemson.
Summary:
LSU was certainly up for the task in their 17-16 road victory over the rival Florida Gators. LSU outgained Florida 341-302 in total yardage. Danny Etling was 9-16 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Derrius Guice was held in check, but the LSU running game as a whole combined for 216 yards and a touchdown on 48 carries. Turnovers have been a problem LSU this season, but a clean game and dominant defense played a critical role in the victory. LSU ranks 78th in total yardage (398.0) and 90th in points per game (25.3). The Tigers rank 26th in scoring defense (18.8).
Auburn has won four straight games after their beating Ole Miss 44-23 on their home field. Auburn outgained 561-429 in total yardage. Jarrett Stidham was 14-21 for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Kerryon Johnson was a monster rushing for 204 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. Auburn totaled 326 rushing yards and averaged 6.4 yards per carry. Auburn ranks 39th in total offense (453.0 YPG) and 34th in points per game (35.8). The Tigers rank 6th in scoring defense (13.0 PPG).
Bottom Line:
There are question marks about how good Auburn really is because their wins have not come against the best competition. Auburn had trouble moving the ball against Clemson and LSU has that caliber of defensive talent. This will be a back and forth “smash mouth” type game with each team trying to impose their will with the running game. Auburn will eventually wear down the LSU defense and pull away in the second half.
