Overview:

On Saturday, December 9th, the (8-3) Army Black Knights will take on the (6-5) Navy Midshipmen.

The Crowd:

“The Crowd” projects a final score of Navy 27.4 – Army 20.0 with an over/under of 47.4.

2017-18 Statistics (130 total teams):

Passing offense: Navy 91.2 YPG > Army 30.5 YPG

Rushing offense: Army 368.1 YPG > Navy 347.5 YPG

Scoring offense: Army 31.2 PPG > Navy 30.4 PPG

Scoring defense: Army 21.6 PPG > Navy 29.2 PPG

Passing defense: Army 206.5 YPG > Navy 240.0 YPG

Rushing defense: Army 153.9 YPG > Navy 159.8 YPG

Turnover Margin Per Game: Army +0.3 > Navy -0.5

Strength of schedule:

Army is (8-3) with wins over Fordham, Buffalo, UTEP, Rice, Eastern Michigan, Temple, Air Force, and Duke.  They were defeated by Ohio State, Tulane, and North Texas. Navy is (6-5) with wins over FAU, Tulane, Cincinnati, Tulsa, SMU, and Air Force.  They were defeated by Memphis, UCF, Temple, Notre Dame, and Houston.

Summary:

Army is coming off their bye week and have had two weeks to prepare for Navy.  Army ranks 66th in total offense (399.0 YPG) and 43rd in points per game (31.2).  The Black Knights rank 30th in scoring defense (21.6 PPG).  After starting their season (5-0) Navy has now lost five of their last six games.  Last week Navy suffered a 24-14 road loss to Houston.  Houston outgained Navy 380-291 in total yardage despite the Midshipmen dominating the time of possession.  Navy totaled 74 passing yards but an interception proved to be costly.  The Midshipmen running game garnered 217 yards and two touchdowns on 60 carries (3.6 average).  Navy’s defense played well holding Houston to 24 points and forcing two turnovers.  Navy ranks 33rd in total offense (439.0 YPG) and 50th in points per game (30.4).  The Midshipmen rank 85th in scoring defense (29.2 PPG).

Bottom Line:

Last year Army finally put an end to Navy’s 14-game winning streak over them.  Five of the last six head to head games have been decided by one score.  Obviously, both of these teams have run heavy offenses so this game will surely be won in the trenches.  Turnovers have certainly been a problem for Navy this year and could play a key factor in this one.  Army is the better team this time around and I’m picking them to win a close one.
