Strength of schedule:
Penn State is a perfect (6-0) with wins over Akron, Pittsburgh, Georgia State, Iowa, Indiana, and Northwestern. Michigan is (5-1) with wins over Florida, Cincinnati, Air Force, Purdue, and Indiana. Their lone defeat came against Michigan State.
Summary:
Penn State is coming off their bye week and have had two weeks to prepare for Michigan. Penn State ranks 33rd in total offense (456.0 YPG) and 16th in points per game (39.7). The Nittany Lions rank 1st in scoring defense (9.0 PPG). Michigan was able to grind and claw for a 27-20 overtime victory at Indiana. Michigan outgained Indiana 329-278 in total yardage. John O’Korn took over at quarterback after Wilton Speight was injured in their win over Purdue. O’Korn was awful against Indiana going 10-20 for just 58 yards. Karan Higdon had a monster game running for 200 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. Both defenses have yet to allow an opponent to score over 20 points in a game. Michigan ranks 87th in total offense (376.0 YPG) and 79th in points per game (27.2). The Wolverines rank 8th in scoring defense (14.7 PPG).
Bottom Line:
Michigan has looked like a different team since Wilton Speight went down with injury. John O’Korn has not given them the same vertical passing game and they have been overly reliant on their running game. Penn State leads the nation in fewest points allowed and will not allow a one-dimensional offense beat them. Michigan can really stuff the run so look for Penn State to get Saquon Barkley involved in the passing game. This should be a low scoring game but I like Penn State to cover the spread at home.
