Strength of schedule:

USC is (4-0) with wins over California, Western Michigan, Texas, and Stanford.  Washington State is (4-0) with wins over Montana State, Boise State, Oregon State, and Nevada.

Summary:

USC remains undefeated after defeating California 30-20 on the road.  The Trojans were outgained by California 416-356 in total yardage.  Sam Darnold was 26-38 for 223 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.  USC rushed for only 133 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries (3.5 average).  The funny irony is California probably outplayed USC but they turned the ball over six times.  USC ranks 22nd in total yardage (492.0) and 38th in points per game (37.0).  The Trojans rank 64th in scoring defense (24.8).

Washington State is also unbeaten after crushing Nevada 45-7 at home.  Washington State outgained Nevada 560-151 in total yardage and won the possession battle by 17 minutes.  The casual fan may not know that Washington State quarterback Luke Falk is a Heisman candidate and one of the best players in college football.  Falk was 36-47 for 478 yards and five touchdowns.  The problem with Washington State is their dismal running game which totaled 55 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries (1.6 average).  Washington State ranks 15th in total offense (504.0) and 12th in points per game (43.8).  The Cougars rank 29th in scoring defense (18.5).

Bottom Line:

This is a dangerous game for USC on the road against a quality opponent.  Washington State is unbeaten although they have played weak competition compared to USC.  I expect both quarterbacks to put up huge numbers and I think this will be a shoot-out.  Washington State’s inability to run the football will be their downfall because it will force Falk to be perfect.  USC will force some key turnovers and win a close one on the road.
