Strength of schedule:

USC is (1-0) with a 49-31 home victory over Western Michigan.  Stanford is (1-0) with a 62-7 win against Rice in Austrailia.

Summary:

USC was actually tied with Western Michigan heading into the fourth quarter when they outscored the Broncos 28-10.  USC outgained Western Michigan in yardage 521-357.  Western Michigan kept the explosive USC offense off the field by winning the possession battle but their defense couldn’t get any stops.  Sam Darnold was an uninspiring 23-33 for 289 yards and 2 interceptions.  Darnold will have to do a better job of taking care of the football against a Stanford defense that feasts on turnovers.  Ronald Jones II carried the Trojans offense with 159 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.  USC’s defense was gashed by the running game which is a concern against a Stanford team that loves to run the football.  Stanford absolutely dominated Rice 62-7 in Sydney, Australia.  Stanford outgained Rice in yardage 656-241.  Keller Chryst threw for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns while Bryce Love ran for 180 yards and a touchdown.  The Stanford defense completely compressed the field and forced Rice into several turnovers.

Bottom Line:

USC’s defense was gashed by the run and if Stanford can control the clock they’ll have a chance.  Ultimately, I don’t see Darnold struggling again and the Trojans should win this one at home.
