Size Matters – Sports Betting in the United States

FacebookTwitter

As a sports bettor, if you are betting the same amount, in general, for each game – you are not going to win.

If you are a sports bettor who adjusts the size of their bets based on subjectivity and/or your “gut” – you are not going to win.

In general, if you do not understand the importance of sizing your bets properly and, in an objective fashion, you are going to be donating to the bookmaker foundation on a regular basis.

Personally, I like to make the same mistake about a 1000 times before adjusting my behavior.

When it comes to investing and betting (which is not investing – it’s entertainment), I have learned the hard way the importance of 1.) Diversification and 2.) Sizing.

If you love the thrill of sports betting, there is no shortage of “opportunities” to diversify on an NCAAF Saturday or NFL Sunday.

Diversification is not a wide sweeping problem – the problem for most folks – those that “lose” on a regular basis – stems from not sizing their bets properly.

80 – 90% of your bets should be small.

The small bets are considered “action” bets, where the larger bets should be considered “core” bets.

Core bets are anywhere from a 1/10 proposition to a 1/30 type proposition – Said differently, Core games are somewhat infrequent relative to the total number of games you could bet on during the week or month.

In the following blogs, we will show you how to think about “sizing” using TCL crowdsourced data and specifically how to think about “size” so you can bet with confidence and bet more objectively – so you don’t blow your fingers off every time you make a sports bet.

Stay tuned and good luck this weekend.

Please see our “Game(s) of the Week” tab on our website – we touch on sizing in our “Expert Analysis” section – The “Expert Analysis” section is under the videos with Coach Holtz and Mark May.
The Expert Analysis will give you a sense of where we are going with “sizing” sports bets properly.

(As an aside, sports betting is for FUN. Sports betting is not a reliable money making endeavor. There are much better and more reliable ways of making money in “markets” – “Sports Betting Markets” is NOT one of them.  If you think you are going to out fox and beat a game in which you are PAYING 5% to 25%+ to play – you need to find something else to do with your time.)
